Brad Barton, Director of Commercialization and Deployment
Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, US Department of Energy
Brad Barton was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as the Director of Commercialization & Deployment for the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) in 2006. Barton is responsible for accelerating the deployment of emerging energy technologies into the marketplace. In this role, Barton works closely with various EERE program offices, national research laboratories and private industry to increase our nation's energy security and enhance our economic prosperity.
Prior to joining the Department of Energy, Barton worked nearly seven years at Hillwood Development in Dallas, Texas. Hillwood, a Perot company, owns and manages a diverse investment portfolio that includes real estate, energy, and private equity activities. While at Hillwood, Barton oversaw investments in natural gas, pharmaceuticals, clean energy, and enterprise software.
Civically, Barton is a founding member of the Dallas Leadership Council. The 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation promotes community involvement for our nations' next generation of leaders and is very active in the support of people with severe physical and mental disabilities.
Barton, a fifth generation Texan, holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University. He also holds a Master's in Business Administration from Stanford University.

Doug Bauer, Senior Vice President

Doug Bauer leads the organization’s Strategic Initiatives Team. Prior to joining Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors in March 2002, he was a Vice President at Goldman Sachs and President of the Goldman Sachs Philanthropy Fund, the firm’s charitable giving vehicle. From 1997 to 2000, Doug was Director of Community Partnership at SmithKline Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline) and Executive Director of the SmithKline Beecham Foundation, where he focused on community-based health care around the world. From 1992 to 1996, Doug was a Program Officer for Culture at the Pew Charitable Trusts where he directed two programs supporting arts organizations. And from 1988 to 1992, he managed the Scott Paper Company Foundation. Doug’s opinions and ideas on philanthropy have been featured in the Associated Press, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Contribute, the Financial Times, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Post and on CNBC.
Doug chairs the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance and the Support Center of Nonprofit Management and serves on boards or committees for the Carbon Disclosure Project (UK), Children’s Health Fund and New York Regional Association of Grantmakers (NYRAG). He is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania where he teaches a course and seminars on philanthropy. Doug is a graduate from Michigan State University. He also holds a M.S. from Penn and a M.J. from Temple University.

Josh Becker, General Partner & Co-founder

Josh Becker started his career in the Clean Energy area in 1991. From Williams College he went to work for ICF-Kaiser International, a DC-based environmental consulting and engineering firm. There he helped launch the first Clean Air Marketplace conference back in 1992 and consulted on energy strategy for companies like General Electric.
After working on Capitol Hill as a Press Secretary for a Congresswoman on the Energy and Commerce Committee he started his first Internet company in 1994 when he co-founded IntraACTIVE a pioneering groupware company. He was also one of the first employees at EarthWeb Inc, which went public in 1998.
After joint degrees from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School, Becker joined Brentwood Venture Capital and then joined Brentwood's technology partners in 1999 in founding Redpoint Ventures (www.Redpoint.com). At Redpoint he brought in investments like BigBand Networks (NASDAQ:BBND) and served as a board observer for BigBand, Esurance, and ViaFone.
Becker is an Advisor to Energy Unlimited, a pioneering wind energy company. He is Co-Founder of the Freedom Prize Foundation (www.freedomprize.org), which will soon be giving out $5M in prizes with DOE to encourage deployment of clean energy technologies and Co-Founder of SmartTransportation.org. Becker is the Founder and Chair of The Full Circle Fund, www.fullcirclefund.org, an alliance of emerging business leaders who help solve public problems through engaged philanthropy and public policy advocacy. He serves on the National Board of Directors for One Economy (www.one-economy.com) and serves on the Board of Trustees for the newest campus in the University of California System, The University of California at Merced. Becker was recently named as one of the Top 40/under 40 people to watch in Silicon Valley by the San Jose Business Journal. He also was selected to be part of the SV100 A group of the 100 Most Influential People in Silicon Valley.

Andrew Beebeis President of Energy Innovations, where he is helping to build one of America's leading solar technology and service companies. Previously, Andrew was a partner with the consulting firm, Clean Edge, where he served as an advisor to companies working on a range of renewable technologies, from solar and wind power to hydrogen and biomass. In 1998, Andrew co-founded Bigstep, a small-business services company. As CEO, Andrew led the company in building an award-winning service, raising over $60 million from top-tier venture firms, hiring over 150 talented employees, and developing partnerships with such leading companies as AOL, VeriSign, Oxygen and Compaq. After reaching profitability with 9,000 paying customers, Bigstep was sold to Affinity Internet, Inc. Andrew serves on the boards of Global Green and The Apollo Alliance.

Ben Black, General Partner & Co-founder

Ben Black is the co-founder and General Partner of New Cycle Capital, a venture capital firm focused on investing in businesses that promote The Sustainable Economy. Black was previously on the investment teams at Maveron, a consumer-focused venture capital firm founded by Howard Schultz, the Chairman of Starbucks, and Rosewood Capital, a consumer-focused private equity firm. He has been integral to investments that include two Inc. 500 award winners, Allconnect and iFloor.com, and also Internet REIT, OnRequest Images , Citizenhawk and SneakerVilla.
As an entrepreneur, Black was part of the team as VP of Corporate Development that transformed Harris Interactive into the leading internet-based market research firm, culminating into a successful IPO and now generates more than $250M in revenue. By training, Black is an attorney and worked at Latham & Watkins after clerking on the Federal Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in 1997. Black earned both his Bachelors of Arts and his Juris Doctor degrees at Cornell University.

Matt Cheney, CEO

Matt Cheney is CEO of MMA Renewable Ventures, which was formed in 2006 when MuniMae acquired Renewable Ventures. As CEO, Mr. Cheney oversees the direction of the Company.
Previously, Mr. Cheney was CEO and founder of Renewable Ventures LLC, a subsidiary of NUON Renewable Ventures USA LLC. Mr. Cheney also served as Director of North American Business Development for NUON NV in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
In addition to developing and implementing Nuon’s North American renewable energy portfolio strategies, Mr. Cheney managed U.S. mergers and acquisitions as a member of Nuon’s Amsterdam-based global M&A team, placing more than $500 million of $2 billion in potential investment capital.
Mr. Cheney has more than twenty-five years in the fields of civil engineering, energy, and environment, including experience with the U.S. Agency for International Development in South America, the National Rural Electric Co-op Association’s International Programs, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Utility PhotoVoltaic Group, now the Solar Electric Power Association.
Mr. Cheney has a Bachelor’s degree from The American University and a Master’s Degree from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, both in Washington D.C.

David Edwards, Analyst
Morgan Stanley
David Edwards covers the clean energy industry as an equity research analyst at Morgan Stanley. His industry focus spans the clean power and transportation industries including the solar, wind, efficiency, emission reduction, storage, biofuels and energy biotech markets. He re-joined Morgan Stanley in 2007 having worked on the firm’s Internet research team in 1998-1999. Previously, David was a partner at ThinkEquity Partners and founder of the firm's greentech practice. Prior to joining ThinkEquity, David served as a buy-side analyst for a hedge fund and as a partner for Charles River Ventures. David also worked in project finance at Kenetech Windpower and product management at Apple Computer and Macromedia. David holds a B.A. in history from Yale University.

John Goldstein is co-founder of Imprint Capital Advisors, LLC, which catalyzes capital for social impact by supporting foundations, individuals, and family offices and their trusted advisors. John is also a co-founder of and senior advisor to Medley Capital Management (MCM), a private investment firm that seeks corporate and asset-based financing opportunities globally and actively serves the development finance and social enterprise markets. Prior to forming MCM, John served as Senior Managing Director of Medley Global Advisors and was also co-founder and Executive Director of the Medley Institute, where he worked (and in many cases continues to work) as a board member, senior advisor or team member, including Global Giving, Distributed Capital, the International Interfaith Investment Group (3iG), Keystone/Access, the Sustainable Food Lab, Aquaya, TBLI (Triple Bottom Line Institute), the Global Exchange for Social Investment (GEXSI) and the United Nations Capital Development Fund. After graduating from college, James started Magic Beanstalk, a 3rd party recruiting company that organized campus recruiting events at 40 universities in the US and Brazil, and later built a web application for online recruiting. As CEO of Magic Beanstalk, James raised $5MM in venture capital, recruited the senior management team, and grew the business from 2 co-founders to 50+ employees with offices in NY and CA. After Magic Beanstalk, James worked venture investor at Martin Varsavsky's (founder of Viatel, Jazztel, Ya.com, and FON) European investment fund, Carpe Diem, based in Spain. James also worked as a distressed debt analyst at Morgan Stanley in New York and as management consultant at Bain & Company in London. In addition to Progress Financial, James is a General Partner of Great Oaks Ventures, a $4M early stage angel fund that has invested in 12 ccompanies, including Jumpcut (acquired by Yahoo!), Trulia (funded by Accel Partners), Zimbio, OKCupid, and Farmacia Remedios. James received his MBA from Stanford where he was co-President of the Entrepreneur Club and a BA in Economics from Yale.

Charly Kleissner , Co-Founder

Charly Kleissner is a philanthropic entrepreneur utilizing his high technology background in his venture philanthropy. He is co-founder of the KL Felicitas Foundation and the Social-Impact initiative, and serves on the Advisory Board of multiple not-for-profit companies like Acumen Fund, Global Social Benefit Incubator, Alliance for a New Humanity, and Global Philanthropy Forum. Charly has over twenty years of experience as a senior technology executive in Silicon Valley. He held executive and senior engineering management positions at Ariba Inc., RightPoint, NeXT Software Inc., Digital Equipment Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Company. Charly serves on the Advisory Board of multiple for-profit start-up companies like Papilia and Rearden Commerce Inc. Charly is now focusing on breaking down the barrier between the for-profit sector and the not-for-profit sector by creating social enterprises as hybrid business structures, insisting that both vehicles can be effective for achieving social change. To that end, he has co-founded 'Flowing Currents', a for-profit entity in Sri Lanka as well as 'Aspira', a not-for-profit entity in Sri Lanka, both focused on providing biomass and other renewable energy solutions to the rural population. Charly earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science specializing in distributed databases from the University of Technology, Vienna. He authored two software patents and published numerous articles. In 2004, Charly received the 'Distinguished Alumnus' award from the University of Technology, Vienna.

Renée LaBran, Partner

Renée LaBran helped to form Rustic Canyon Partners in 1999, following 15 years of strategy consulting and hands-on operating experience. Until turning her attention to forming RC/Fontis, Ms. LaBran’s investment focus was on software, digital media, and business and consumer services.
Prior to Rustic Canyon, Ms. LaBran held a variety of executive positions with the Los Angeles Times / Times Mirror in the areas of digital media, advertising, investments and strategic planning. During her tenure, she managed revenues in excess of $300 million and oversaw more than 200 employees. She was also a co-founder and served as chief executive officer of CareerPath.com (now CareerBuilder), and a co-founder and board member of Classified Ventures. Prior to Times Mirror, Ms. LaBran was a management consultant with the Monitor Company in the US and Europe, and managed the Los Angeles office.
Ms.LaBran graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California at Berkeley, and earned an MBA with honors from the Harvard Business School.
Ms. LaBran currently serves on the boards of IdeaForest, Intersperse, Meximerica Media, Inc, Mobileplay, and PC on Call. Her non-profit activities include serving as a director and President of the La Canada Flintridge Educational Foundation, and as a Director of the Hathaway – Sycamores, a family services and mental health agency.

Deborah J. La Franchi, President & CEO

Ms. La Franchi, as the founder and CEO of SDS, develops innovative market-driven approaches to economic development. SDS has built and capitalized more than $2 billion of Double and Triple Bottom Line private-equity funds with its affiliated partner Economic Innovation International, Inc. These funds seek: (1) market rates of return, (2) positive community/social impacts, and (3) environmental sustainability. Further, the two firms jointly manage the $75 million National New Markets Fund, LLC, an allocation of federal tax credits for real estate projects in low-income communities. Ms. La Franchi is also a co-author of the Double Bottom Line Handbook funded by the Ford Foundation. During the past four years, SDS’ Nonprofit Capacity Building Division has secured $15 million in grants for nonprofit clients serving high-poverty communities. Jason Lutz is the President of Sneaker Villa, which strives to be the premier fashion retailer by fusing the best of fashion and music into a high energy shopping experience. Sneaker Villa was named by Inc. Magazine as one of the Top 100 fastest growing inner city businesses in the United States in 2006 for its 219.9% revenue growth from 2000 to 2004. The company currently employs 200 people and is on track to reach $30M in revenues in 2007.
Operating in some of the most economically challenged areas in the country, Sneaker Villa has opened 16 state-of-the-art retail stores that have become social hubs for the community. Sneaker Villa plans to double in size over the next 18 months. Consistent with the company's goal to change how business is done in inner city neighborhoods, Sneaker Villa hires from the community, provides health insurance and offers stock options to store employees. In addition, each store is required to perform 250 hours of community service per year and to become an active partner with community organizations and schools to support youth activities and promote attendance. Investors in the company include Rosewood Capital, a top-tier consumer private equity firm, and leaders from Staples, Arby's, Virgin MegaStores and David's Bridal.
Jason is a 1995 graduate of Lebanon Valley College, currently serves on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club of Reading, PA, and is an avid supporter of City Year of Greater Philadelphia. He is married and the father of five children.

Pierre Trevet, Managing Director

Mr. Trevet is Managing Director with Innovest in San Francisco and Head of Carbon Finance. Christa Velasquez, Director of Social Investments

Christa Velasquez is Director of Social Investments at the Annie E Casey Foundation. The Foundation is a private charitable organization whose principal mission is to help build better futures for disadvantaged children and families.
Ms. Velasquez is responsible for developing, coordinating, and managing the Foundation’s $100 million social investment fund. She develops and implements the Foundation’s evolving social investment strategy, designs social investment policies and procedures, and educates staff about Social Investments (SIs) and how to identify potential investments. Ms. Velasquez also manages the due- diligence process and is responsible for deal structuring, portfolio monitoring, developing a technical assistance plan for grantees and partners, and creating SI training tools.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Ms. Velasquez spent six years at Brody·Weiser·Burns (BWB), a consulting firm based in Connecticut, the last two years as an associate partner. At BWB, she specialized in social investing, community development financing, business planning for social ventures, program evaluation, and management of minority cultural institutions. She has worked extensively to develop new SI programs, evaluate and redesign existing programs, underwrite and structure investments, and monitor the performance of borrowers and investees.
Ms. Velasquez is on the Board of Managers of TRF Urban Growth Partners, the board of directors of the American Visionary Art Museum, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, and the Advisory Committee of the Yale University School of Management Internship Fund.
Ms. Velasquez has an undergraduate degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Chicago, and an M.B.A.

Francesca Vietor, Principal
V Fund
Francesca Vietor has more than fifteen years of experience working for environmental and social change domestically and internationally. She administers the V Fund, her family foundation that focuses on the environment. She serves on several Boards of Directors including the Goldman Fund, Bioneers, Slide Ranch, Commonweal, and Save The Bay.
From 1997 – 2001, she led the Environmental Department for the City and County of San Francisco and in 2003, headed the Environmental transition team for Mayor Gavin Newsom. Francesca has worked for many nonprofit organizations, including Rainforest Action Network, Greenpeace, Island Press, and CARE Madagascar.
Francesca’s consulting firm, Ecoworks, provides strategic, philanthropic and organizational services to non-profits, businesses and foundations. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at the California College of the Arts while raising her two-year old daughter Chiara with her husband, author Mark Hertsgaard.
